Life as we knew it changed this week. We have always known that Christopher is a determined little boy and that he will figure out a way to do what he wants to do. We learned this week that we underestimated his ability to accomplish his goals. Last Wednesday, Christopher was home with Alice. He was playing on his computer in my office like he often does. Sometimes he will play for an hour or two before he moves on to another activity. He loves his Fisher Price computer games. It was a beautiful sunny day finally signaling the end of winter. Alice was in our living room folding clothes and watching a little tennis from the Indian Wells tournament. Before she even finished the laundry, she heard a friend of ours yell through the apparently open front door and say, "Alice, is Christopher at the park?" We have a really cool park across the street from our home where I frequently take Christopher to play. Alice replied, "No, he's in the computer room" as she hurried to confirm her belief. Much to her surprise, Christopher was not there. Rushing out the front door, she quickly identified Christopher across the street playing with another neighbor trying to coax him back.
He didn't have any shoes or socks on, and as you know, he does not walk on his own. Somehow, he managed to unlock our front door (which I am certain that I locked before I left for work), opened the front door, traveled down our front steps, made his way down the driveway to the road, scooted across the road (most likely on his bottom), and went to play at the park without asking Alice first :)
After Christopher was safely back in our home and Alice called to tell me of his adventure, we both realized that our belief up to this point that Christopher was safe and contained within the walls of our home is no longer true. Needless to say, I will be installing a new lock on the door that is a little higher, and our door chime is back on!!!!!!!
